Post Event Update:

Citizens gathered on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the Niagara Region Métis Council office in Thorold for an engaging and informative Harvesting Information Meeting led by Jim Tolles, MNO South West Region’s Captain of the Hunt Liaison.

During the session, Jim shared valuable teachings and practical information related to Métis harvesting traditions and practices. Participants learned about traplines, beaver trapping, and general harvesting knowledge, while also having the opportunity to ask questions and connect with fellow citizens who share an interest in harvesting.

The afternoon included a number of hands-on demonstrations that were especially popular with youth and families. Jim brought harvesting teachings to life with a memorable deer impression, and children had the opportunity to use Nerf guns to learn about safe firearm handling in a fun and age-appropriate way. Attendees also explored traditional tools and techniques, including a bow drill fire stick and demonstrations on how to make and set a snare trap.

The meeting offered a meaningful opportunity to pass along traditional knowledge, build skills, and strengthen connections to Métis harvesting practices and ways of life.

Maarsii to Jim Tolles for generously sharing his knowledge and teachings, and to all the citizens and families who attended and helped make the gathering such a success.
