Achieving Our Mission

By assisting the Métis citizens to reclaim their heritage, distinct from all other Aboriginal people in Canada, as stated under Section 35 of the Constitutional Act, 1982

By promoting research through genealogical documentation throughout the Niagara Region through the registry.

By encouraging participation of all individuals to seek out their heritage and encourage community development.

By educating our youth in the history, culture, language, and traditions of the Métis.

By gaining the acknowledgment and respect of the Métis, as a Nation and a people.

Council Introduction

The Niagara Region Métis Council (NRMC) has been serving the Métis community since March 29, 2008, when the Charter was signed and the council was established. Prior to NRMC, the Welland Council (no longer active) served the surrounding community. Today, the NRMC Council is based in Thorold, near Brock University, where it continues to support Métis citizens and families across the Niagara Region.

NRMC is made up of dedicated Council members—many of whom have served the community for years, alongside others who have contributed their time and leadership in the past. Together, this continuity and shared experience have helped shape a strong, supportive, and community-driven council.

The NRMC is committed to fostering connection, culture, and community through events, initiatives, and partnerships. From family gatherings and youth activities to seasonal celebrations and cultural initiatives, the Council works to create welcoming spaces where Métis citizens can come together, share knowledge, and build lasting relationships.

Grounded in respect, collaboration, and community pride, the Niagara Region Métis Council continues to grow and evolve—guided by the voices and needs of the citizens it serves.
