Celebrating Powley Day at the 2026 South West Regional Rendezvous
On September 19, Métis citizens, families, friends and community partners gathered at Guelph Lake Conservation Area for the South West Region’s Powley Day Regional Rendezvous—a full day of culture, connection, learning and celebration.
Held on Powley Day, the gathering provided a meaningful opportunity to come together while recognizing the landmark R. v. Powley decision and the Powley family’s lasting contribution to the recognition of Métis rights in Canada.
From the Island Stage to the Community Fire and throughout the grounds, there was something happening around every corner. Guests enjoyed live music and performances from Métis musicians, youth and community members; canoeing on Guelph Lake; archery, axe throwing and fire starting; harvesting games; children’s activities; a vendor market; and a shared BBQ lunch.
Culture and hands-on learning were at the heart of the day. Brian Moore demonstrated beaver skinning and fleshing, while South West Captain of the Hunt Liaison Jim Tolles shared his knowledge of fishing, trapping and harvesting through his display and fish-processing demonstration. Guests who wanted to learn by doing were even invited to take part in the beaver skinning and fleshing, and the processing of the fish themselves. Other activities included bannock-making at the Niagara Region Métis Encampment, fur and leather working, a canoe restoration display with Tom Moore, storytelling and learning to play the spoons—where some of our new spoon players joined fiddler Braxton for a performance on the main stage.
New this year was the Historic Community Connection & Fire, where guests could explore their historic Métis community connections, share family stories and contribute a leaf to our Regional Tree. The MNO Registry, Ontario Métis Facts and Self-Government teams were also on hand to provide information, resources and opportunities to connect.
The day was made even more special by the many elected officials, performers, demonstrators, vendors, staff and volunteers who shared their time, talents and knowledge. A heartfelt Maarsii to everyone who helped make the Rendezvous possible—and to every citizen, family member and guest who joined us in celebrating Powley Day, Métis culture and the strength of our South West community.
